Telugu Desam Party (TDP)’s national president, Nara Chandrababu Naidu, is set to become the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh for the fourth time after a decisive victory over Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s YSR Congress Party in the Assembly election, which was held alongside the general election in the State.
The TDP, now part of the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) along with the State’s Jana Sena Party (JSP), secured 135 seats. The Pawan Kalyan-led JSP contributed significantly by winning 21 seats, while the BJP won eight.
In contrast, the Yuvajana Shramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) won only 10 seats. This means that the YSRCP will not have the status of the Opposition party in the Assembly, which requires at least 18 seats.
Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy faces a significant setback after he secured 151 of the 175 seats in the 2019 election, reducing the TDP to just 23 seats.
As part of the seat-sharing arrangement, the TDP contested 144 of the 175 seats, while the JSP and BJP contested 21 and 10 seats, respectively.
In the previous elections, the YSRCP emerged as the dominant force securing 151 seats with nearly half of the total vote share, while the TDP managed 23 seats with a significant vote share.
The Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections were held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha polls on May 13. The Assembly of Andhra Pradesh comprises 175 seats, with 29 specifically allocated for the Scheduled Castes (SCs) and seven for the Scheduled Tribes (STs).
Key contenders in this election were Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy from YSRCP, N. Chandrababu Naidu representing TDP, and Pawan Kalyan leading JSP.
Andhra Pradesh borders Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana, and Odisha, with a long coastline along the Bay of Bengal. Telangana was part of Andhra Pradesh until 2014 when it became a separate state with Amravati as a capital.
